After the break up of the Soviet Union, a transitional football team was formed as a loose union of the former union republics, called the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). For Euro 1992, the Soviet team had already qualified, and by creating this unified team they were still able to take part in the competition.
The CIS team finished with to draws and a loss, and did not progress past the group stage.
Before 1992, the Soviet Union participated in the European Championships, and post 1992, their tournament record was succeeded by the Russian team.
