The first world championships in alpine skiing were held in 1931. Initially there was an event every year, but now it is held every two years.
History
Here is a list of the current and past Alpine World Ski Championships, as designated by the International Ski Federation. In 1941 due to lack of competitors the event was not designated as a World Championships. Between 1948 and 1980 the Winter Olympics events were also designated as the World Championships.

Trivia
- A lack of snow in southern Spain in 1995 caused a postponement of the World Championships to the next year.
- The World Championships have been held only once in the Southern Hemisphere, in Portillo, Chile in 1966.
- The 1950 World Championships in Aspen were the first held outside of Europe.
