Training Methods: Balance

Balancing on one footBalance is the ability to stay upright or stay in control of body movement, and is an important component of many sports. Exercises to improve you balance should be included in any balanced exercise program. A great way to improve your balance is to work on the core muscle groups that help to maintain your posture. Pilates is one way of doing this.

There are two types of balance: static and dynamic. Static balance is maintaining equilibrium when stationary, while dynamic balance is maintaining equilibrium when moving.

We use our eyes, ears and 'body sense' to help retain our balance - it is a very specialized and complex skill. As we get older this ability to maintain balance deteriorates. Simple exercises such as walking, climbing stairs, stretching and resistence exercises will help.
