Ukrainian athletes first competed at the Paralympic Games as part of the Soviet Union at the 1988 Paralympics. In 1992, athletes from Ukraine also competed as part of the Unified Team. The nation competed for the first time as Ukraine at the 1996 Summer Paralympics and the 1998 Winter Paralympics. Since 1996, Ukraine has participated in every summer and winter Paralympics.
The country has been very successful at the Paralympics. Apart from Russia, Ukraine has won more medals than any other former member of the Soviet Union. One of Ukraine's most successful athletes is Viktor Smyrnov, who won five gold medals in swimming at the 2004 Summer Games. Ukraine also won the men's football 7-a-side competition in 2004 and 2008.
At the 2022 Winter Paralympics, under the cloud of their country's invasion by Russia, the Ukraine team achieved its best-ever result - 29 medals including 11 gold. Their previous best was seven gold in 2006 and 2018.
