The Volcano Marathon starts at San Pedro de Atacama in the heart of the Atacama Desert, near Lascar Volcano, an active volcano in Northern Chile. The marathon starts at an altitude of 4,475 meters (14,682 feet), and is the highest desert marathon in the world.
The runners do not actually race up a volcano, but the course offers them spectacular, panoramic views of up to 10 volcanoes.
The Volcano Marathon is organized by Global Running Adventures, who also organise the annual North Pole Marathon and the Antarctic Ice Marathon.
