The Democratic Republic of Congo is not to be confused with the Republic of Congo. They are two separate territories and the DRC, as it is sometimes called, simply loves football. It is the main sport that most Congolese love to pay and their national team is a two-time champion of the African Cup of Nations (1968 and 1974). They also qualified for the World Cup in 1974 (playing as Zaire).
The TP Mazembe club also made quite an impact as being the first African club to reach the finals of a FIFA tournament, losing on to the European Champions Internazionale in the 2010 FIFA Club World Cup.
Other than football, the Democratic Republic of Congo has also performed well in other sports like basketball. One of the NBA's best defensive players of all time came from this part of the world. Dikembe Mutombo is not only known to be one of the tallest pillars in the NBA in his time but is also the only guy to do a face to face block on Michael Jordan who is considered to be one of the best players of all time. Mutombo is not only a great basketball player but he is also known for his various social work projects.
DRC has been sending athletes to the Olympics since 1968, back when it was known as Congo Kinshasa. However, their next Olympic participation will wait sixteen more years after that before they can send athletes once more in 1984. They have been competing ever since. The DRC is the second most populated state that has not taken a single Olympic medal home.
