The Gabonese Republic is a Central African state located in the west coast that is bordered by Cameroon, Republic of the Congo and Equaterial Guinea.
As with most African countries, football rules though it is mostly played in the coastal region because the country has most of its territory covered in dense forests but nevertheless, they have been a member of the International Federation of Associated Football since 1963.
The Gabon national football team is known as Les Pantheres (The Panthers) did qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations five times. They also have also taken home quite a few honors like the UDEAC Championships (1985 and 1988) and the CEMAC Cup (2013) and runner up in both events in 1989 and 2007 respectively.
Although Gabon has never competed in any Winter Olympic Games which is typical in most African countries, they have been going to the Summer Games since 1972 (Munich) where they sent 26 athletes. They have been sending less athletes after they skipped the 1976 and 1980 Summer Games until the 2012 London Games where they took their very first Olympic medal by Anthony Obame who won silver in Taekwondo Men's 80+ kg division.
