India are one of six nations to have appeared at all World Cup Tournaments, winning the tournament twice, in 1983 and 2011. India's first World Cup match was played on Jun 7, 1975 against England at Lord's, London. In that match they were beaten by England by 202 Runs.
Trivia
- In 1999, the trophy won by the Indian cricket team at the 1983 World Cup was damaged during a violent rampage on the Indian cricket board's headquarters by the Hindu nationalist group Shiv Sena.
- The first hat-trick at the World Cup was by Indian Chetan Sharma in a game against New Zealand in 1987.
