Conducting the beep test is only the first step in assessing the aerobic fitness of your athlete. Analyzing and interpreting the results of the test are more important to understand what the results mean and to modify training appropriately based on the results achieved. The tables of normative values below enable you to rate your beep test result. The scores are listed as the number of levels / number of shuttles completed, and grouped by different age groups. You can also see how you compare the elite athlete results in the beep test, and this list of beep test records.
There are two sets of norms. The first were created by Topend Sports is for those 12 years and older, based on data from the VO2max norms, the results of athletes and personal experience. Use these only as a general guide. The second set of data is based on a study of over 1 million youth aged from 9-17 years. You can also get a fitness rating using the Beep Test Calculator.
You may wish to adapt these tables for your specific sport requirements. For sports where aerobic fitness is a minor component of fitness, a low score may still be rated as average or acceptable. For sports in which aerobic fitness is a key component of fitness, the expectation of your athletes will be higher and what may be rated a good in the table below may only be an average score for athletes of your sport.
Topend Sports Beep Test Norms
These tables of beep test ratings for ages 12+ were created by Topend Sports, based on data from the VO2max norms, the results of athletes and personal experience. The results are presented as the level number followed by the number of shuttles (see the beep tables). Use these norms as a general guide to performance in the beep test.

Norms for youth aged 9 to 17 years
The following norm tables were adapted from data published in LeBlanc et al. (2016), a world-wide study of over 1 million children and youth over a period of 35 years. These tables provide a greater range of scores for children compared to the tables above, though for the corresponding age groups it is generally easier to rate higher. This highlights the differences between the sample groups. I would use the tables above for an active group (such as junior sports teams), and the tables below for testing groups of all abilities such as school groups.

my 10 year old son did a beep test in his school today and got 10.6 I notice your table does not rates 10 year olds. How would you classify that. Apparently he was the only one in his year to get into the 10 range. - Bronte Craig (2014)
In some primary schools the teachers set the test up for 10-15 meters as opposed to 20 to make it more enjoyable for the kids. - Izzy is 7 Jamesssy (2017)
I got level 74 (I'm 7) 3------- - BarnZarn Jamesssy (2015)
exactly my thoughts. It's still not enjoyable, I'm ten and i took the beep test recently, got minimum score and promptly collapsed - Jade BarnZarn (2016)
Even though you guys don't like it, I have done it in 2013 2014 and 2015 and I love it! The first time I got level 6 second time only 3 and today I got 11. It is enjoyable if you think about it. Also we did 20m (I'm 11 by the way😛) - Noella Jade (2017)
I love doing beep tests too! Great job on getting 11, I am 13 and I get 8.9 :) - Yer mum Bronte (2017)
my primary school makes the kids do 20m - Maddy Craig (2013)
Hats amazing for his age good job - Anaum Osman craig (2016)
Thats pretty good! My high score is 11, and I'm a 13 year old girl. - Nicholas Spring (2014)
Hey, I'm a small 13yrs old and I got 16.5 on the beep test! What do you think of it??? (It was 20m) - Random person456 Nicholas Spring (2015)
I highly doubt you got 16.5 as the world record is 17.1. And considering your "small" I highly doubt you could sprint 5 points of 15. My teacher put it at 17 when I was twelve (late birthday) and the highest was somebody sprinting there and back 3 times. There's no way you could get 16.5 unless it WAS shorter than 20 meters - Jade Random person456 (2016)
My friends are 11 turning twelve and three of them got just past level 14. - Rude much? Random person456 (2015)
Um... the record is not 17.1... the winner on the USWNT (Unites States Women's National team) got in the 60's... I think you have a different version than everybody else on this website.. because 3 is really bad, and if you took the time to look at the chart instead of being rude, then maybe you would know that. Less than a 3.3 is considered very poor for 13-14 year olds. - Also, being small helps with running based on my experience. I always do much better than my taller/bigger classmates.
- Luke rude much? (2015)
60? Are you insane? At level 21 its like 3.9 seconds between markers. That high by rights would be less than 2 seconds per 20 meter sprints. Which would be world record breaking pace as the 100m record is 9 seconds. Do you enjoy making up stuff on the internet? - Jamie luke (2016)
True Luke true - PE teacher luke (2016)
There's confusion between what you guys are looking at - This table is not the raw score, the first number indicates which level you got to, then following the slash, the second number indicates which lap you completed in that level. For instance, the 6/5 actually means the 6th level, 5th lap, or 46 total laps. If someone is reporting that they ran a 60, that probably means they reached level 7, lap 9, or 7/9 in the chart. - Sports science PE teacher (2017)
I think the 60's probably represent VO2 max which the rest is designed for. I believe the highest level is 17.14 for the standard test although there are many variations. However for example a level of 10.5 should give an estimated VO2 max of 51. Some Special forces use a level of 14 for an entry point. That's pretty fit however that's just the bleep test and just to apply. The rest of the processes make lvl 14 seem like having a snooze on the sofa. - Josh Roberts rude much? (2016)
its impossible to get 60's - BarnZarn Random person456 (2015)
good point i got 1.18 or level 18 and promptly collapsed. the highest at my school was level 60 something. Im ten by the way - Anaum Osman BarnZarn (2016)
Really? It was probably only like 10 meters, I achieved a score of 11 for 25 meters, and I am a 13 year old girl. Level 60 is literally impossible. - Doug Stern Anaum Osman (2020)
I don't even think level 60 is a level... I heard that some athletic runners get as high as level 19... and considering that you're only 10 years old I highly doubt that you got level 60, oh wait I just searched it up, there is 25 levels of the beep test, so its pretty much impossible you got 60 BarnZarn. - Rob Admin Doug Stern (2020)
Sometimes the total number of shuttles is counted, so a score of 60 is possible, which equates to about level 7 on the 20m test. - Oscar BarnZarn (2017)
I'm pretty sure you are doing a different test because the one I did at my school only goes up to level 21 - Shaun Cox Random person456 (2015)
My son is 14 & fit plays 3 different sports at state level & did peep test today with sore Knee, he got 15.5 but said he could have continued but rest of his year didn't make 15 so he pulled out short of what he believes he could have got. we have runners that run at state Lev & highest other was 14.9, hes starting to get freakish & thinks he could have pushed 17. could he really? over the last month everything is changing fast so some guidiance would be great thanks. - Daf Jenks Shaun Cox (2017)
He wouldn't be able to reach 17. Maybe with years and years of training, but not at this moment. The difficulty grow exponentially, the gap between 1 and 13 is smaller than 15.5 and 17 - Rory Shaun Cox (2015)
15.5 is an incredible score but at 16 and up its extreme sprinting most top end athletes can barely make 17 so it might be being a bit ott considering he's 14 - Daf Jenks Nicholas Spring (2017)
There is no point lying online as it just makes you look like an idiot.
Possibly you might have had 6.5, but not 16.5 - Truth Nicholas Spring (2015)
put him in the olympics if you're telling the truth. He will probly get gold medals. - Nicky Truth (2015)
Hey thanks guys. I haven't been running much more. Mainly been playing football but I might quit and only run on a daily basis. It's strange because I seem to do better in the beep test than actual races. - BallerMurphy Nicholas Spring (2015)
you need to take up olympics at them levels - Parky Nicholas Spring (2014)
I did the beep test at school today. I'm 14 and got 5.4....same as last year...bleh - Justin (2014)
hey i'm 13 and scored 14.1 on the beep, breaking my school record. what is 14.1 on the chart? - A Nick justin (2017)
Wow really? 13 as well and got exactly 14.1 just yesterday - Anaum Osman justin (2016)
Damn... I beat the girl school record with 11 but 14.1? Wow. - Kayla justin (2015)
it means that u are exelent < this means greater it says that 9/3 and greater are considered excellent - Canine (2014)
I'm 12 and a girl and I only got a 4.6 :( anyone got any tips or anything so I can do better next time? - Anaum Osman Canine (2016)
Don't breath from your mouth, eat a good breakfast, consume lots of fluids, stretch first and you should be fine! Set personal goals for yourself. After you finish, walk around rather than just collapsing, it will be harmful to your body by doing so. - Nateylion Canine (2016)
Always run on the spot waiting so it doesn't release lactic or hydronic acids also have sharp turns.
I don't really know I only 12 years old anyway - Swagger GotMoreSwag Canine (2016)
Don't sprint at first, jog only as you have more time, then you have more energy. :) - Gerald R. Ford Jr. Canine (2015)
My first and lowest was 4.8 when I was 11. I'm currently 13, I usually run 9.6. Keep running on tracks, exercise, and be fit. Keep running the test, you improve through time and effort. - Ryan Gerald R. Ford Jr. (2015)
Lol we have the same scores i am the same age however when I was 11 i got 4,4 I just turned 13 and today I got 9,6 - Leila Canine (2014)
I know how you feel... When I was 10, I got 3.3, which is pretty bad compared to my classmates. To get a good score, you've gotta push yourself really hard, and run till you break. - If you're doing it in a group, at the beginning you should stick with your peers at the average pace. Try not to be the first one to get out, and don't just give up, do the best you can do. I know it feels like it's killing you, but you've just got to keep going. Trust me, it works. Now I'm 12, I got 8.2, which is about okay. I'm pretty sure you can do it and beat me xD
- Kira (2014)
What is excellent for a 11 year old? My daughter got 8.6 for a score. Is that excellent or very good? - Heheitsliv Kira (2014)
Well as I student I believe that 8.6 (depending on how many meters) is really good however it may not be the highest. So to answr your question. Very good. - Grasshoopper (2014)
wow, i thought my score wouldv'e been about average for an adult, but no, 13.13 the other day, so happy now - John (2013)
What does the slash mean? Like 12/7? - Rob Admin John (2013)
The first number is the level, and following the sash is the number of shuttles within that level. I prefer this way of writing it as if it was written as 12.7 it may seem like a decimal which it isn't - Dino John (2014)
it means level 12 / line 7 - Adam John (2014)
it means level 7 beep 7 - Kye (2014)
I'm eleven and last year in December i got 11/2 but I was the only one in my class but i think it's going to be pretty hard to beat this year plz tell me a good strategy - SULLY OSSSS Kye (2014)
Mountian dew and Doritos tend to get you that MLG status so just keep tearing in to those and you should be right - Heheitsliv Kye (2014)
There are many ways. Some find that humming or focussing on breathing helps. And others have unusual tricks like trying to remember old dreams etc. if these don't work. Look it up - Anaum Osman Kye (2016)
Just pace yourself, and tell yourself to keep going. You will probably get tired at around 7, and want to stop at 10, but after you reach 11/2, push yourself and go as fast as ever. - Nicholas Spring Kye (2014)
Just run, I know the feeling with the pressure so I say don't care and just run, hope it helps - Kirsttt (2013)
I'm a 15 year old girl and on Friday I'm doing a beep test to get into the army for work experience. Can you please tell me what haven I would ideally need to her in and how many miles that would equal up to? - Neon (2013)

Hi can anyone advise what the expected beep test results for children under 9 are? If there are any?? - Anonymous (2017)
It gets harder in high school like if your were 10 and got a 9 in the beep test that would be easier to pass as a 14 year old than a 10 year old. And a 10 year old would find it harder to get a 9 in a beep test for 14 year olds because it goes faster as you get into high school. - Thatkidwhoreadsbooks (2017)
Today doing 28m I got 9.1 and i am 13. How long is the average beep test - Sarah (2017)
I am 12. The last time I did the beep test i was 11. I got 12.4. I am not lying. I am fairly tall for my age, people usually mistake me being in grade 8 not grade 6. My school, considers me being fast. - Max (2017)

Hi i am 12yrs old i did the beep test today and got 11.6, i wasnt the highest the highest was 12.3, anyways it that good? i didnt understand the chart (20m) - George (2015)
Everyone is clearly lying about there scores on here. Or doing it on a 10 meter course no 10 year old can get over level 10 unless they are on steroids!!! I find it funny that most of you think you can beat Sebastian Coe's score of 17, he is a champion middle distance runner. stop lying people. Do the proper bleep test then come back an comment your scores, thank you. - Theking tv George (2017)
i'm not sure, i got 8/4 when i was about 10 and i was 12 when i got 12/4, i vomited about 5 minutes later and i had to go home early - PE teacher George (2016)
Likely, the 10 year olds reporting a "10," didn't reach level 10. They did 10 lap total...According to the chart above, 10 laps total would be a 2/3, or 2.3 as many are writing on here - Mom B (2015)
My son is 14 and his score for soccer was 15. Is that good? - Adrian (2015)
I'm 10 and got 17.2 but I don't know how long it was - Rory (2015)
The first time I did the bleep test I was just 13 and I got 7.5... A couple months later I got 8.7. My birthday was just a christmas and I got 10.2 last monday. Teacher says we're going to do it again in a few weeks.. Should I be proud of my score? And what should I aim for next time? (It's 20 meters)and I'm a guy just to clarify - BarnZarn (2015)

im 13 and i scored 9/6 when i was 12 i scored 9/3 im east african btw - Harry Stanworth (2015)
I'm in the fire service, our entry fitness test is 9 we also do this quarterly, 9 is not a easy number to get if you're not training regularly, I do not think many of you are doing the beep test correctly, as I know the army also require 9, if all these 11-15 year olds are doubling it or going onto 11 and 12 they definitely aren't doing it right, don't mean to be a hater just saying it how it is. I average 10.3 at the age of 23 which is actually very good. - Emin Azak (2015)
i did 14.5 and im 11 and for the 25m run with the year 10-11 recording which is much harder - Baekhyun (2015)
I just did the beep test today I'm 13 and female I got 6.1 but in my high school that's considered good fitness.. - Sean (2015)
does height matter because im the shortest in my year but I scored 11.2, and my p.e teacher said I must practice a lot, so I was wondering if height matters in the test. - Theking tv sean (2017)
usually it makes you better at the beep test because there's a lot of start and stop and weighing less means you have less inertia (its easier to stop) - Dylan Kirk (2015)
im 11 and it doesn't show 11 year olds. is 11.10 good - Haylie (2015)
I'm 13 year old girl who got 17.2 and I am 5foot 8inches. - Theking tv Haylie (2017)

Im a 12yr old girl and recently got 19/14 on the beep test. I do heaps of sport and it was definitely 20m but I don't know if it was the same sort of test. Are there different sorts the 20m beep test?? - Rob Admin Anna (2015)
Maybe you were doing a yoyo test. Did you have to pause after every 40m?

Hi I am 13 year old and I play football and in my beep test I got 13.4 (20meters) - Sneddon (2015)
Love this, helped me a lot :) - Regan (2015)
I am a 13 year old girl and I did the 20m beep test. I got 7.6 which is ok but not that good compared to the people in the comments but I'm not sure if they did the 15m beep test or the 20m beep test. I was the third to last person to leave, and some people opted out at about level 3-4 so I think I did good but next time I'm doing it (next school term), I am going to try and get into Level 8. I am running and getting ready in preparation. - Kit Regan (2015)
Oh my gosh I had the exact same! I'm 13, I did the 20m, I got 7.6 and I was 3rd last person to leave! - R (2015)
I got 7/5 in my 20m beep test and my teacher said I did terrible and gave me detention??? also I had an asthma attack so isn't that unfair I was one of the last people and I am 13 - Regan r (2015)
Your teacher's an idiot. I'm 13 too and I'm pretty healthy and I got 7.6. So seeing as you had an asthma attack, you did really well. Forget about your teacher, they can't expect you to get a really high score when you're having an asthma attack. Well done for getting through it. - Lauren (2015)
I got 10.4 and I'm 12. I got the highest in my year but I could of got better if I didn't fall over 😰 ( I have a disease in my leg so j give way easily) - Jesse (2015)

Great Job, I Got 16.2 And I'm 13 - Lexi (2014)
I got 14/1 at age 12? - TGR (2014)
hi,
I've been training to get fit for about 8 months. My goal is to get in to the police force. My beep test score is 6-6.5 at the moment. I last did it on a 40 degree day and got 6. Probably could have pushed a little harder. I have a few issues with the beep test, so maybe some information might be useful.
First off I'm a 23 yo female about 5ft, does my height hinder my result? I weigh 57 kilos and have lost 6 kilos over the last 6 months. I think that puts my bmi in the good category.
My training week looks like this:
Monday night: cardio class, which involves punching kicking and running and some circut for an hour.
Tuesday: pt which is usually weights Followed by a long run, fartlek or gradual increase in speed.
Wednesday: weight class
Thursday: pt weights and then cardio class.
Friday: hill sprints or run
Saturday rest or beep test
Sunday rest or beep test.
And am.about to incorporate a swim somewhere.
I seem to be good at weights but cardio is taking a wile. Especially for the beep test. Any tips??
I have done one beep test for the afp and had never done one for a physical before which was difficult because it was a different recording to one that I have practiced to as well as the weeks prior I had really practiced my timing so I would hit the line at the beep to get the maximum out of my running. However everyone else was running ahead which also put me off.
I hope this makes sense. My mobile is having issues typing this. - Vantablack TGR (2015)
Hey, your training looks pretty solid. If you are keen to improve your score on the beep test I'd suggest adding some shuttle runs and intervals to your regime (or doing shuttles as intervals). You want to get your heart rate up and down a few times (pretty high - don't worry, you won't die even if you feel like you might!) I know you are doing cardio, but cardio in the gym and circuit doesn't always translate to running, and running in a straight line doesn't necessarily translate to the beep test with all the back and forth (accelerating and such). It's not complicated - match your training more closely to your goal. As a suggestion: set out a couple of markers 15 meters apart, run as many shuttles as you can, pushing off hard each time, for 90 sec. Rest 60 sec while walking. Do that three times. Then get a good rest (maybe 5 minutes while walking). Then do the whole thing three times. Maybe mix up the distances, go for 30 meters the second time, and 20 the third. This is going to work your VO2 max as well as the same muscles that you use in the beep test. Great stuff on what you have been doing, you rock. - Tay (2014)
Well I'm unfit. Newwww it. I'm 12 and got a 3.5 and the average at my school is 4.5 - Runnerbean (2014)
I'm a 69 yr old female and just got 4/7 so need to make it to more than 5/7 to become excellent. - KKL (2014)
I also beat the school record which was 17/8 - KKL (2014)
Hello guys, well done for all your beep test scores. At my school we do 15 meters and I got 18/2, I'm not sure if that's good or not, since it's not 20 meters. - Adam (2014)
im a short 11 years old and I got 9/5 in 20m. what would that rate as? - Adam adam (2014)
im adam(as seen above) I believe that if you want a big score in the beep test you need to have pure fitness.
my score I had was 9/5 if you don't believe then think again cause its pure fitness no lies. - Guest (2014)
Hello, the names nick and today I just did it, I've just turned 13 yrs old, fairly small and I got 16.5 :D, topped the school record, what do u think of my score?? This is no lie, I ledgit got 16.5 - Immy Guest (2014)
That's really good, I'm a girl that's 12 and I got 14/1 is that good? - Sunshine Immy (2014)
What? why yall asking if scores like 14 is good? Do everyone in this site have like supersonic lungs or something? Looking at your age, leve 14 is like way over exellent! :D - Richard Sunshine (2014)
Some people are blatantly lying or not doing the correct distance. You really are not fooling anyone - Chlo (2014)
Oh? In our secondary school, we have to run and our other foot MUST touch the black marking at the time of the beep, ideally we'll have no waiting time. It means that in the earlier levels we won't be sprinting because it would just lead to a twenty second gap between runs. I don't think we're cheating. It's just that our tests are based mainly around stamina, so by doing that continously and building yourself up, we won't strain ourselves and it won't make for some awkward running (Run; Wait for beep for twenty seconds; Run). - Niloburgh Chlo (2020)
Level 1 is only 8.5 seconds
