Here are some of the sporting highlights in the world of sport for 1927.
René Lacoste won the French Open and the US Open that year for his fourth and fifth grand slam titles. Lacoste picked up two more slams, one at Wimbledon the following year and the other at the French Open a year after to finish his career with seven total slam titles.
After a four year slam drought Gerald Patterson won the Australian Open for his third and final grand slam title. Henri Cochet, who won the French Open the previous year, extended his slam wins by taking Wimbledon. His streak of winning at least one grand slam in a year continued for three more years.
Helen Wills Moody won Wimbledon and the US Open that year to start a streak of multiple slam wins in a year which lasted for four years. She won 10 slam titles in that span and finished her career with 19 total, which currently places her fourth in the list of all-time slam winners.
In men's golf, Walter Hagen won his fifth PGA Championship title, which was also his fourth consecutive win at the event. Bobby Jones won The Open Championship for the second straight year. He took the event again two years later and finished his career with a total of seven major titles.
The first-ever Ryder Cup was held at Worcester Country Club, in Massachusetts, USA, contested between Great Britain and the United States.
The world snooker championship was also held for the first time in 1927.
